🍴 3 new Portland restaurants to try this fall

September 8, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! Welcome back from the long weekend! There are some amazing cafes, bakeries, and restaurants opening this fall. Food writer Brooke Jackson-Glidden shared some previews on the podcast:

  • 🥐 The James Beard Award-winging bakery JinJu (North Williams Avenue) is reopening later this month or next, a half mile south of its original location. (There’s a loyal following for their almond croissants.)
  • 🍞 Babcia Bread, previously a pop-up, will be opening their own bakery in Milwaukie. (Tip: Check out their pastrami croissant.)
  • 🍴 Feli (Slabtown) is from the restaurateurs behind Urdaneta and will specialize in food from Southern Spain.
  • ☕ Bossa (Northwest) will be a cafe by day, focused on Brazilian coffee culture, and cocktail bar by night.
  • ☕ Latte Stone Cafe (Northwest) is also going to serve “really great coffee,” says Jackson-Glidden. It’ll specialize in the food culture of Chamorro — the Indigenous peoples of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

A Roof Deck for Big Pink?

Nevada car dealership magnate Jeff Swickard is making a pitch to turn the top of Oregon’s second-tallest building into a roof deck. He owns Big Pink — aka the U.S. Bancorp building — as well as other downtown properties like the Black Box. Though Swickard says it’s a longshot to get the permits for the roof deck, he has other plans too, like “a ground-floor food and beverage plaza.” [Willamette Week]

Could NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Help Portland?

Oregonian sports columnist Bill Oram spent a significant amount of ink scolding Portland City Council when they were debating whether to approve a funding package for renovating the Moda Center. Now he’s turning his ire on Blazers owner Tom Dundon, and urging NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to push Dundon to the negotiating table. Dundon has stayed away, designating the job to his employees and potentially endangering a deal, Oram writes. [Oregonian]

Spider Season in Full Swing

If you’re finding spiders in your home right now, you are not alone. Late summer is colloquially known as spider season, but what’s actually going on is mating season for Oregon’s largest spider — the giant house spider. The males of the species come out of hiding to search for females. Yes, they are always around, but now they’re just more visible. [Oregonian]

Portland Mailbag

It’s time for one of my favorite parts of the newsletter — reactions and recommendations from our audience:

Wrong Portland

A few weeks ago, a listener of our podcast shared that City Council candidate Eli Arnold had something unusual on his website: The picture of Portland City Hall wasn't in our city — it was in Portland, Maine. We shared that observation on the podcast and the newsletter. And we got a response:

“Your show alerted me to a picture of the wrong Portland City Hall on my website! We just hired someone to do a revamp of the website and this was quite a surprise to me. I promise I know what our City Hall looks like. Thanks for alerting me to the error. I would've been really embarrassed if that hadn't been caught so soon. Have a great night.” — Eli Arnold, Portland City Council candidate, District 4

Best Home-Based Kitchens

The newsletter and the podcast featured some recommendations from food reporter Brooke Jackson Glidden on restaurants operating out of home kitchens. We asked for your recs and got two for the same spot:

“Gris Gris Kitchen has been operating in SE Portland for several years, and serves a variety of NOLA inspired dishes,” wrote David Raphael.

“This is my favorite one in town!” wrote Bill Oakley, former Simpsons writer and now food writer, with a link to Gris Gris Kitchen.
