🌮 The best food carts in Portland

September 2, 2026 · — Giulia Fiaoni

Good morning, Portland! Whenever I try to lure friends and family from afar to visit me in Portland, our delicious food carts are always on my list of things they have to experience. Recently, the Oregonian put out its list of the best food carts in the Portland metro area — I was shocked to see none of my favorites made the cut. It made me wonder about the many excellent food spots I've never even heard of in our city. Another list I'll be eating my way through soon comes from a conversation about local vegan restaurants on the City Cast Portland podcast.

Today's Must-Know

Parents Push For Less Screen Time For Portland Students

This week, a group of Portland parents — who represent the local chapter of the national organization Schools Beyond Screens — released a proposal to curb the hours students use screens, artificial intelligence, and education technology on Portland Public Schools campuses. [Oregonian]

  • A closer look: The proposal includes banning all device use in the classroom until after second grade. Also up for consideration are returning to homework assignments that are pen- and paper-friendly when possible and removing all gamified learning tools with digital rewards like prizes and level completion. [Oregonian]
  • What's next?: They are now seeking feedback from the Portland Association of Teachers and hope to share their proposal with the school board next. If approved, PPS would have some of the strictest rules on devices in the classroom across the nation. [Oregonian]
  • Related: This week, Meta reached a $18 billion settlement with 48 U.S. states — in addition to Washington, D.C. and other U.S. territories — in a trial over youth social media addiction. Meta will now be implementing child safety tools — like platform usage time limits and content controls — on Facebook and Instagram. [Associated Press]

Bygone Portland Brands Now at PDX Airport

Last week, two recently closed Portland businesses will live on at the airport: The Skanner News concessions store, honoring a recently shuttered Black Portland newspaper, and Sheridan Fruit Co., which continues the legacy of the recently closed grocery store in southeast. Airport retailer Paradies Lagardere licensed the names and worked with the businesses on the airport versions. Can our airport get any better? [Portland Business Journal]

A Campaign Finance Watchdog’s Latest Complaint

Campaign finance watchdog Seth Wooley filed an elections complaint with Multnomah County and state elections officials this week against Sharon Meieran’s campaign for county chair and Fixing Multnomah County — the political action committee she directs. The complaint alleges Meieran used the committee to fund her campaign and did not report it as an in-kind contribution, which may be in violation of campaign finance limits. [Willamette Week]

ICE Targeting Oregonians Without Criminal Records

Data released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and published by the Deportation Data Project last month shows a spike in immigration arrests this summer in Oregon — and an increase in arrests of people without criminal records. Immigration arrests in Oregon more than quadrupled in June and July compared to February of this year — and, according to the New York Times, only 4% of those arrested nationwide had violent criminal convictions. Street renaming update: Portlanders are ready to rename César E. Chávez Boulevard — given the allegations of sexual abuse against the farmworker union leader it was named for.

But many are torn on the best replacement: Campesinos Boulevard — to represent all farmworkers — is the leading contender, but many prefer a return to 39th Avenue.

What would you pick? One of these two options or something else?
