City Cast Portland

👀 Portland’s best people watching

August 16, 2026 · — Ben McBee

Happy Sunday, Portland! We’re setting our sights on yet another street fair (and crossing our fingers for smoke-free skies) as we check out the Hawthorne District. Along the Southeast Portland boulevard, you’ll encounter a palpable Bohemian vibe, strong “shop local” spirit, and so many bars and restaurants that it would take you at least a month to try them all. Let’s get started.

More Than 20 Years in the Making

A while back, we decided to take tomatoes off our menu unless sourced locally at peak ripeness. This commitment turned tomato season into an annual celebration at Grand Central Bakery. Our BLT pairs thick tomato slices from Deep Roots and Gathering Together Farms with Jack Mountain Meats’ bacon, lettuce, and mayo on toasted Como bread. Bacon not your thing? Try an LT or add tomatoes to any sandwich! Order online or visit your neighborhood cafe.

Here are some assorted Hawthorne honorable mentions: Cinemagic, Echo Theater Company, House of Vintage, OK Omens, Jet Fuel at Hawthorne Asylum, GOL Soccer Bar, Apizza Scholls, Cubo, Khao Moo Dang. We could go on and on, but alas, word counts exist.
