🔥 LA and Spokane are a warning to Portland
August 14, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! There’s lots to do this weekend 📚 Everyone’s invited to celebrate the reopening of the beautiful new Belmont Library tomorrow and Sunday. You can get in a bit of street fair time in Multnomah Village tomorrow and Kenton on Sunday.
You can also find some of your neighbors giving out produce grown in a yard near you — during the PDX Yard Share, on Saturday. Also: Don’t forget to catch the end of The Portland Mercury's Burger Week 2026. Or head out to Hillsboro for the Crash Landing Festival 🎸

What's DC Talking About
Ex-Labor Secretary’s New Job
Former Oregon congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who resigned this year as U.S. labor secretary, has found a new job lobbying for data centers at public affairs company Think Big. “Gallup says seven in ten Americans don’t want a data center built near them,” she wrote in a social media post. “I believe that can change.” [Oregonian]
Goats on a TriMet Bus
It’s Portland, so naturally goats seem like they’re everywhere — including (apparently) on public transit. Earlier this week, two pygmy goats boarded the FX-2 Division bus. Customers helped encourage them to go back to roaming the streets before the bus went on its way. [KGW]

A Warning After Spokane’s Wildfire
After the urban wildfires in Spokane and Los Angeles, a Portland-based expert on energy issues is warning that the city faces a risk — not just in Forest Park but in Oaks Bottom as well. Robert McCullough explains why the city should be doing more to prepare. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

More Than 20 Years in the Making
A while back, we decided to take tomatoes off our menu unless sourced locally at peak ripeness. This commitment turned tomato season into an annual celebration at Grand Central Bakery. Our BLT pairs thick tomato slices from Deep Roots and Gathering Together Farms with Jack Mountain Meats’ bacon, lettuce, and mayo on toasted Como bread. Bacon not your thing? Try an LT or add tomatoes to any sandwich! Order online or visit your neighborhood cafe.

Where Is It?

The mural “Cairo,” by Egyptian artist Aya Tarek, is located on Shaking the Tree Theatre's building at Southeast Grand Avenue between 8th and 9th.
A shoutout to reader Joshua Westfall, the only one this week to find the spot.
This week’s mural is from reader Sandra W.:

Do you know where to find this cat?
Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.
If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt usually every Friday. We’ll have the answer next Friday — and a new scavenger hunt for you. We shout out the first 10 readers to get the correct answer.
📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
