🐦 ‘Portlandia’ is back.
July 13, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! Portland’s drive-thrus are all a bit of a throwback, since Portland outlawed new ones in 2018. But today on the podcast, food writer Alex Frane shared his picks for the best ones around, including:
- Face Plant — A vegan fast food restaurant on Swan Island.
- Best Baguette — A banh mi shop on Southeast 82nd and Powell.
- Tecos — A Mexican spot on Southeast 42nd and Powell.
- Franks-A-Lot — Hot dogs in the parking lot of the Whole Foods on Burnside.

Today's Must-Know
Governor’s Race Unexpectedly Competitive
Democrats enjoy an 11 percentage point advantage over Republicans when it comes to voter registrations in Oregon, but statewide elections are often closer than that. This year, with voters dissatisfied with the direction of the state, there are signs the race for governor could be even more competitive than usual. [OPB / Oregonian]
- A key indicator: On Friday, the nonpartisan outlet Cook Political Report switched its rankings of the governor’s race from Solid Democrat to Likely Democrat. [OPB]
- Republican polling: The Republican gubernatorial candidate, State Sen. Christine Drazan, last week released the top line of an internal poll showing she leads Gov. Tina Kotek, the Democrat: 48% to 44%. [Oregonian]
- Still, experts expect a Kotek win: We’ve been here before. Polling in the last two gubernatorial elections predicted a closer race than it ended up being on Election Day. And Oregon hasn’t elected a Republican governor in four decades. [OPB]

31 Minutes for Police Response to Park Attack
Half a dozen women were left defending one another at Council Crest one sunny day in April as they waited 31 minutes for police after several of them were attacked by Ayman Elkholy, 31, of Beaverton. Elkholy later pleaded guilty to three counts of harassment and one count of attempted strangulation. “We just started hitting, punching, scratching, pulling his hair, pulling on his clothes — everything,” said a 74-year-old victim. “I didn’t feel in any danger because the sisterhood was there.” [Oregonian]
