🍕 Pizza Week, Spring Bazaar, and 503 Day

April 17, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! If you’re looking for weekend plans, there’s the Spring Bazaar, a combo flower and maker’s market. There’s also a Puffin Welcome Celebration in Cannon Beach as the birds return to the coast for the season — and a Clown March in Laurelhurst Park 🌼

Also, The Portland Mercury’s Pizza Week starts Monday.

And looking further ahead, if you’re a long-time reader, you’ll remember that City Cast Portland created a special annual holiday to celebrate our city — 503 Day — on May 3. We’re not hosting this year, but we will be there. Same location as last year in downtown's Ankeny Alley. Stay tuned for more details 🎉

What's CITY Talking About

Spring Eagle Chicks

After a pair of bald eagles — Liberty and Justice — built their nest at Vancouver's Royal Oaks Country Club, the golf course installed a camera in 2024 for everyone to watch them. Eagles, who generally mate for life, build substantial nests that they return to. And this spring, two baby bald-eagles, Peace and Harmony, were born on March 29 and 30, attracting an online following. [Oregonian]

Sneaker Museum for Portland

Given Nike, Columbia Sportswear, and Adidas America’s presence in the area, it’s no surprise that there’s now an effort underway to open a sneaker museum here. “There’s a lot of big swings that will transform our city over the next 10 years,” says David Rae, former Nike creative director and co-founder of TedxPortland. “And our little sneaker project is just one part of the story.” [Oregonian]

  • Deadline: The plan is to open before 2030, when the Moda Center will host the NCAA basketball women’s Final Four.

Proposal To Cut 600-Plus Shelter Beds

Facing a $93 million deficit, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson proposed a budget for next fiscal year that includes drastic cuts. The proposal includes cutting 166 full-time jobs as well as more than 600 homeless shelter beds and more than $1 million from an afterschool program. [OPB]

Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for the mural “Black Pepper,” by the artists Smithe and Caratoes, located in Old Town on the building at 234 NW 5th Ave.

A shoutout to readers Elio and RebaMac for identifying the spot.

This week’s scavenger hunt is again from photographer Mark E. McClure. This one’s timely — that’s the hint:

Do you know this mural?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll reveal the answer and shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
