🌸 Peak cherry blossom weekend, Whale Watch Week, and World Water Day
March 20, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! This is the peak weekend for Portland’s waterfront cherry blossoms 🌸 Whale Watch Week also starts at the coast 🐳 And Sunday is World Water Day!
Today’s newsletter has more weekend ideas for you below ⏬

What's CITY Talking About
Renaming Cesar Chavez School? In addition to an eastside street honoring the labor leader, Portland has a school named after him. But parents there — as well as Portland Public School board members — said picking a new name wouldn’t be immediate. This comes after the New York Times published an investigation of Cesar Chavez’s alleged sexual abuse. [OPB]
Ex-counterterrorism official under investigation: The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether former Trump administration counterterrorism official Joe Kent improperly shared classified information. Kent, a former candidate for U.S. Congress in southwest Washington, resigned in protest of the Iran war. This isn’t the first time the Justice Department has investigated Trump’s political opponents. New restaurants to try right now: In the midst of some challenging times for the city’s dining scene, there are still some restaurateurs opening up notable new spots. Portland Monthly’s Alex Frane offered his picks for the new restaurants to try right now. They include two Thai spots — OK Chicken & Khao Soi and Yui — yes, our city has room for more. Plus, there’s a new Barcelona-style tapas restaurant, Vya. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt stumped all you readers, but you can find it on the Northwest corner of Southeast 13th Avenue & Bidwell Street in the Sellwood-Westmoreland neighborhood.
This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Stephan Vertal:

Do you know this mural?
Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.
If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt on Fridays. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.
📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
