🏚️ Trump’s homelessness leader to visit Portland
March 13, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! McMenamins will be opening a new downtown hotel — renovations are underway. The brewpub and hotel group bought the former Taft Home, which served as a residence for low-income folks before it closed in 2021. It’s close to other McMenamins properties — the Crystal Ballroom and Crystal Hotel.

City Council President Jamie Dunphy Picks a Fight with a 95-Year-Old
On Tuesday, City Council President Jamie Dunphy put a 95-year-old Portland resident on blast for mailing in a critique of his appearance — notably, his tattoos. “Please consider wearing long-sleeved shirts in public,” the handwritten note said. "No. Mind your own business and keep your small-minded opinions about other peoples bodies to yourself," replied Councilor Dunphy, also in a handwritten note. Councilor Dunphy shared a picture of the exchange side-by-side on his personal Instagram. [Oregonian]
Arrest Made in Connection With Elephants Delicatessen Fire
A suspect has been arrested in connection with an early-morning two-alarm fire at a beloved Northwest Portland location of Elephants Delicatessen. Catherine E. Stough, 56, was allegedly "using an open flame torch to look in garbage cans near the deli when she unintentionally lit flammable material inside," the Oregonian reported. It is unclear when the location will reopen. [Oregonian]
Trump Homelessness Leader Visiting Portland Next Week
President Donald Trump's leader on homelessness policy, Robert Marbut, will be paying downtown Portland a visit next week. The invite-only meeting to "share federal priorities" includes local leaders but leaves the press and the public out of it. Marbut is known for policies focused on strict sobriety and working your way out of homelessness as opposed to Portland's long-standing housing-first approach. Mayor Keith Wilson said he will be in attendance and will provide remarks at the event. [Oregonian]

Where Is It?

Last week’s mural stumped all our readers. But if you want to see it in person, it’s located at 2611 SE 4th Avenue.
This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Irisa P.:

Do you know this mural?
Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.
If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt on Fridays. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.
📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

Each week, we include favorite local spots and organizations picked by City Cast Portland Neighbors. It’s a member benefit, but it’s also a great way to get to know our city:
- “Black Rose Liquor on 182nd and Powell has the best selection, prices, and people! Friendly staff can help you select something new or different, and the vast assortment of beers, liquors and hard to find bottles is terrific. BIPOC owned and operated. Love this place!!” — Beverly R.
- “The Good and Evil Wrap food truck in Milwaukie Station is my go-to place for a lunch that is guaranteed to be tasty and satisfying.” — Andrew G.
- “Yalla in Multnomah Village is an astonishingly great restaurant, for food and setting and service.” — Rob H.

🎧 Checking in with other cities: City Cast has a new weekly podcast, called your “Your City Could Be Better.” This week, we’ve got two city hosts breaking down a really important issue: federal policing. Chicago’s Jacoby Cochran is talking with D.C.’s Mike Schaffer about a new D.C. law that aims to hold federal agents accountable.
Episodes drop every Friday, and with appearances by different hosts and producers from the 13 cities where City Cast has shows and newsletters. So far, they’ve touched on anti-ICE protests, homelessness, and creative plans to revitalize downtowns. If you love your city and complain about it anyway, this is the podcast for you.
