⁉️ Are you a real Portlander?

March 12, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! Tanya Lyn March, owner of the guided walking tour company Slabtown Tours, joins City Cast Portland podcast host Claudia Meza to discuss their mutual love of the St. Johns neighborhood. She says the neighborhood has one of the most interesting histories in all of Portland. Plus, she and Claudia have tips on present-day establishments you should check out when you visit.

14-Year-Olds Can E-Bike Now

Oregon legislators lowered the age for legally riding an e-bike. Fourteen-year-olds will now be able to ride class 1 e-bikes, the kind that hit a maximum speed of 20 mph. Previously, it was only legal for Oregonians who were 16. [Willamette Week]

A First Strike at PCC

Hundreds of Portland Community College faculty and staff walked off the job yesterday. PCC’s Federation of Faculty and Academic Professionals represents about 1,600 members; PCC’s Federation of Classified Employees has 600 support workers as members. Both are demanding a wage increase to keep up with inflation. It’s the first time either union has gone on strike at any PCC campus. [OPB]

🙌 A big shoutout to reader Harvey Kline, who inspired today’s questions by sending me a copy of his book “The ABC’s of Portland’s Alphabet and Pearl Districts.” Thank you again, Harvey —I hope you enjoy how I’m (finally) putting it to good use for all the newsletter readers.

🍴 Before you go: Portland restaurants this year are hosting several high-profile out-of-town chefs — one with a Michelin star, another a Food Network celebrity — for special dinners. Oregonian restaurant critic Michael Russell has his eye on a dinner at Cafe Rowan on April 10 and 11. (That one involves a Michelin star.)
