What's CITY Talking About
🚗 New Bill Keeps ICE Away From License Plate Data
A new bill passed by the Oregon Legislature restricts federal access to automated license plate data to prevent the information from being used for immigration enforcement. Instead, the information will be strictly limited to law enforcement use for issues such as stolen cars, missing persons, and tracking suspects. This comes after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement accessed license plate data in several Oregon cities last year. [Oregonian]
🚧 Plans For Lloyd Center Redevelopment Officially Approved
The Portland Design Commission unanimously approved a long-awaited plan to demolish and redevelop the Lloyd Center Mall, including the famous ice-skating rink, late last week. This comes after years of rumors and back-and-forth about the mall's fate and some resistance from the community that still uses the space. Owners KKR Real Estate Finance Trust and Urban Renaissance Group plan for a mixed-use development, featuring housing, market space, parks, and public art. [Oregonian]
🧃ODOT Budget Issues Threaten Kids' Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School, a program focused on improving roads and access to road safety education for kids, might face a $17 million cut in the upcoming state budget. This was recently proposed as one of many solutions to address a $289 million gap in the Oregon Department of Transportation’s 2025-27 budget. [Willamette Week]
