City Cast Portland
💙 The largest US city to protect polyamorous families?
February 27, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! A Portland group has been hosting its own day-long “Survivor” competitions in local parks, with 50 contestants so far. If you want to check out Survivor PDX or watch the new season with fellow super fans, they’re also hosting weekly watch parties 📺

What's CITY Talking About
Legal Protections for Polyamorous Families
City Council advanced legislation that would make Portland the largest U.S. city to enshrine antidiscrimination protections for polyamorous families — if approved by the full City Council next week. As part of a larger policy proposal to protect LGBTQ+ rights, City Councilor Tiffany Koyama Lane introduced an amendment to explicitly protect “multi-partner or multi-parent families and relationships.”
- Related: Other councilors, including Eric Zimmerman, supported the proposal but raised concerns that the specific protections could attract an “extra spotlight by the Fox Newses of the world” and drum up “undue fervor in the conservative ecosphere.” [OPB]
Gov. Kotek’s Reversal on Universal Preschool
Last summer, Gov. Tina Kotek made a concerted effort to overturn Multnomah County’s free universal preschool program. She issued public rebukes of the tax on high-income earners that funds the program as she signaled support for ultimately failed legislation to kill the program. But now, in an unexpected reversal, she is convening a panel to explore taking the universal preschool program statewide. [Willamette Week]
Big Pink Owner Buys Another Building
Jeff Swickard, who made a fortune in the car dealership business in Nevada, has purchased a second downtown office building. He bought the smaller, but still substantial 267,000-square-foot Five Oak building for $10.5 million — 67% less than its 2014 sale price. The new acquisition sits adjacent to Big Pink, the largest office building in Portland, which Swickard bought last year. “This is a 10-plus year investment horizon,” he said. “This is a long-term waiting game.” [Oregonian]

Where Is It?

This mural — entitled “For the People of Lents,” by Molly Mendoza — is located on the side of the Walker Stadium in Lents Park, where the Portland Pickles play. It was “painted in 2020 to show the different faces of Lents,” wrote reader Shana.
A shoutout to José, Sir Jefferson, and Shana, who all identified the location.
This week’s scavenger hunt comes from City Cast Portland’s John Notarianni:

Do you know this spot?
Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.
If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt on Fridays. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.
📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

🚘 Bumper sticker update: I spotted this “Jesus Would Let Me Merge” bumper sticker earlier this week. It felt like the right kind of delightful scolding for our often irreligious city.
A few minutes later, I walked by a storefront on Northeast Broadway, and hanging in the window of Witchwood (tagline: “for the morbidly inclined”) was a black sweatshirt with the message: “Don’t Pray for Me.”
Both messages seemed equally Portland.
