🐸 The Portland Frog goes to DC

February 24, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! The Portland Frog Brigade packed their bags to head to Washington, D.C. for tonight’s State of the Union address.

Now an internationally famous symbol, the frogs are headlining a protest called the State of the Swamp that will stream live today.

What's CITY Talking About

More Than Half of Oregonians Moved Here

Oregon ranks 10th in the U.S. for the highest proportion of residents who moved here — 54.4 percent of Oregonians weren’t born here. Nevada is No. 1. And it’s official: California provides the highest number of Oregon’s incoming residents. [Oregonian 🔒]

Trump’s New 15% Global Tariffs

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield successfully led the multi-state effort to overturn President Trump’s tariffs at the U.S. Supreme Court. But over the weekend, President Trump announced 15% across-the-board tariffs. These tariffs may last only 150 days under a trade law provision that has never been employed this way. His advisers said he was on solid legal footing and would again enact more permanent tariffs. [New York Times]

Travel writer Matt Hansen's picks for best gluten-free food included Portland Fish Market. (Matt Hansen)

Last week’s list of Portland’s best gluten-free spots included an invitation for your suggestions. And your fellow readers had plenty of picks:

(Note: Not all of these restaurants operate entirely gluten-free kitchens.)

  • "Hold The Wheat in Beaverton — one of the best GF bakeries I’ve had. Also [they] have a deep bench of DF options too.” — Philip E. Higgins
  • Kyra’s Bake Shop in Lake Oswego. “Great sweet and savory offerings. Custom and wedding cakes.” — Tracey S.

“Sooo yummy, and those cinnamon rolls? To DIE for! — Jon
  • “Bastion in Sellwood is my favorite.

“A fun one is Butterfly Belly Asian Cuisine. This is not a fast experience as the owner(?)/main person runs karaoke. It’s a totally different environment, which is a great place for someone who doesn’t have anyone to hang out with. It’s entertaining, and it leans toward a living room environment.

“Kirari West Bake Shop. Japanese egg custard buns. Yummy sandwiches — this place is amazing.” — Tabitha Freeman
  • “Salvi PDX at Ground Breaker Brewing is gluten-free, and so is all the beer. They are located on the corner of Southeast 7th and Southeast Lincoln.” —Peggy Pfenninger
  • "For beer, we have Evasion right here in inner Southeast (with their brewery also in McMinnville). Portland's OG GF beer is Ground Breaker, also in Southeast.

“For food, there's Schilling Cider House with tons of cider but also an entirely GF pub food menu. Tiny Moreso in Cully and Gluten Free Gem on Northeast Broadway have been hooking us up with GF sweets for years. GF fries fried in a GF fryer are important for folks like me with celiac disease: my favorites are the waffle fries at Take Two and the poutine at Potato Champion.

“Perhaps the biggest omission is the fried chicken at Your Side Chicks food cart in Nob Hill. They have another spot in Southeast, too. Fantastic. Second place goes to Hat Yai's two locations for their southern Thai fried chicken, and third place goes to FOMO Chicken near Southeast Ankeney.

“Lastly, I would highlight El Pilón for GF empanadas, fries, and yucca fries.” — Eric Oliver
  • “Mestizo on Southeast Division is a delicious Mexican gluten-free restaurant, as well as Verde Cocina (Hillsdale) — with their yummy desserts and many vegan options!

“Bamboo Sushi, a Japanese restaurant, is also GF, which makes delicious GF tempura vegetarian sushi rolls, like the Green Machine.” — Suzanna Yahya Nadler
  • “White Rabbit Bakery in Aurora is the best!” — Holly
