👠 Why liberal Portland should want cops in drag

February 17, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! There are a lot of serious, light-hearted, and pie-in-the-sky ideas circulating about how to bring back downtown. Portland City Councilors Olivia Clark and Steve Novick share what’s already happening — and what else is in the works — to recruit more visitors and businesses to the heart of the city. And they share some laughs: Should Portland hire more cops — and have them perform their duties in drag? That would surely get some attention for our city. 😉

What's DC Talking About

Job Losses Mount

The Portland area lost 9,000 jobs last year — the fourth highest of any metro area in the country. That plus slower population growth, high housing costs, and growing homelessness point to “structural challenges that will shape Portland’s trajectory for years to come,” warns a recent report from Portland-based research firm ECOnorthwest. ⛸️ Before you go: Among those who prize the Lloyd Center ice rink most highly are a pair who have skated there for six decades. Tally and Jerry Leonard are regulars (they get to pick their own music) and skate every Wednesday through Friday.

They competed in two National Figure Skating Championships, winning third place in 1969. They married in 1971.

“They are beloved skaters here,” said Arwen Niedert, who’s among those hoping to save the ice rink from the developer’s planned demolition of the mall. “Everybody knows and loves them, and people even come into the mall just to watch them. It’s really sweet.”
