City Cast Portland

🚌 The future of a dangerous, busy Portland street

February 13, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! 🚨 An exciting announcement to start the day:

The first episode of a new City Cast Portland podcast — Your City Could Be Better — dropped this morning!

Host David Plotz, who is also CEO of City Cast, will be talking about everything from housing solutions to dog poop crises — the weird things cities across the country are trying and the surprising successes.

The first episode is on how the Twin Cities’ resistance to the immigration crackdown took many forms — from grocery deliveries for immigrants scared to leave home to active engagement with federal agents.

His guests will include some people you may recognize — like our local City Cast Portland podcast host Claudia Meza.

What's DC Talking About

This Year’s Snowpack Is Hopeless

At the beginning of winter, meteorologists still predicted that this year had a shot at being a snowy one. But now we have a record-breaking snow drought across the state, and meteorologists now say it’s highly unlikely we’ll make up for it during the rest of winter. Now they’re warning that we could see a longer wildfire season. [OPB]

Superstar Joins ‘Save the Lloyd Center Ice Rink’ Effort

Olympic gold medalist Ilia Malinin — known as the Quad God for successfully landing the first quad Axel in a 2022 competition — joined the effort to save the Lloyd Center’s ice rink, sharing an Instagram story from the Save the Lloyd Center Ice Rink Coalition and a link to their petition. Skaters, young to old, who train at Portland’s one year-round indoor ice rink are seeking City Hall’s help preserving the rink. [Oregonian]

People who are supporting some of these measures are looking ahead for East Portland and envisioning something that's radically different than what we even see now.

The Future of 82nd Avenue

It’s a dangerous street — with the city's busiest bus route and the most delays — and it’s finally being considered for a major overhaul: 82nd Avenue, a former state highway, is becoming more a part of the city. But there are still major decisions to be made including on whether to have a dedicated bus lane (a TriMet committee will announce their recommendation soon) that’s put transit advocates and neighborhood businesses at odds. Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for this bike rack in Tualatin's Pirate Park. It proved to be a challenging one for our readers — no one got it.

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from regular photography contributor, Mark E. McClure. It also might be a challenge, but it’s an intriguing photo too:

Do you know where it is?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt on Fridays. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
