💰 Why Portland City Hall keeps finding $$

February 10, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! Red yarn is currently in short supply around Portland. It’s a sign that local knitters are eager to do their part in protesting immigration crackdowns. Here’s why:

Minnesotan Paul Neary, who works at Minneapolis’s Needle & Skein yarn shop, created a pattern that’s a red “Melt the ICE Hat.” It’s based on a Norwegian Santa hat from 1940s protests against Nazi occupation. And it’s gone viral. Proceeds from the sale of the $5 pattern go to support immigrants.

💚 Our trees, covered in the furry green of moss and lichen, are my favorite features of the Pacific Northwest landscape. So naturally, I’m into Moss Appreciation Week. The Portland Japanese Garden is observing this week with a special moss display (free with admission). And Lewis & Clark College has a series of events, including a moss petting zoo.
