What's CITY Talking About

Tear Gas Ban

Portland City Councilor Sameer Kanal wants to ban the use and even storage of tear gas within city limits. “There is no place for chemical weapons to be used in war,” Kanal told The Oregonian. “And there’s no place to use them against civilian populations inside our city or country.” The proposal will face opposition from the Portland Police Bureau, not to mention the federal government, but Kanal says there are other nonlethal munitions that law enforcement can still use. Skanner Closes Shop

The Skanner, an influential Black-owned Portland newspaper, formally closed on Jan. 31 after 50 years in business. Co-founder and executive editor Bobbie Dore Foster cited the “same issues that have plagued newspapers for the last decade” — a loss of advertisers among them. [Willamette Week]

Portland Psychiatrist Named in Epstein Files

Dr. Paul Conti, a well-known local psychiatrist with a private practice, emailed with sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. There’s nothing in the email to indicate Conti “did anything beyond socializing with Epstein and taking sizable payments from him to provide psychiatric help to a woman,” according to Willamette Week's review of the files. Conti says meeting Epstein resulted in his providing "medical care to someone" — and that the woman is still a client has remained a client, even after Epstein stopped paying for her treatment. Iconic Record Store Owner To Sell

Terry Currier has worked six days a week for the last 42 years at his shop Music Millennium, which is the oldest record shop in the Pacific Northwest. At 70, he’s looking to sell the business (and possibly the building) to a fellow music enthusiast. [KOIN]

  • Related: Currier has achieved Portland icon status: Aug. 12 is officially Terry Currier Day. He was, after all, the man behind the phrase “Keep Portland Weird.” [Oregon Music News]
