🧑⚖️ Portland judge to rule on tear gas
February 3, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! Last month, we had sunny but cold weather; now it’ll be just plain warm with no rain expected for the next several days ☀️Does this still count as false spring if we haven’t even had winter yet?

What's DC Talking About
Court To Rule on Tear Gas Use
A federal judge in Portland plans to rule today on a temporary restraining order that could block federal agents from using tear gas and other forms of force at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in South Waterfront. On Sunday evening, federal agents deployed tear gas against protesters for the second day in a row. In court filings, some protesters said they heard no warnings before federal agents deployed crowd control devices — including flash bangs. [OPB]

International Moves Fueled Oregon Population Growth
Oregon’s population growth owes more to people coming here from other countries — as opposed to other states. Last year's net population growth was 9,600 from international destinations compared with 2,200 from U.S. states (overall, more people moved here from other states; but a lot of people also left for elsewhere in the U.S. too). It continues a trend: Older data show that since 2020, Latin America accounted for half of Oregon’s international immigrants, with Asia making up another third. [Oregonian]
Hospitals’ Failure to Prevent Infections
According to recently released data, in 2024, Oregon’s hospitals collectively failed to meet national standards for preventing infections after certain types of surgeries and hospital procedures. That’s significant, because infections acquired at hospitals are a leading cause of death — and also preventable. There was variation among individual Oregon hospitals. One example from The Lund Report: “Providence’s hospitals fared well across the board with the exception of its Medford facility.” [The Lund Report via OPB]
