Tear gas at Portland ICE protest that included kids
February 2, 2026 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning — and hello February! It definitely can be Portland’s gloomiest month, but there’s plenty of bright spots to be found ⬇️
But first we have an update on the latest news in Portland.

What's DC Talking About
Tear Gas at ICE Protest
On Saturday, thousands of protesters — including kids and elders — participated in a largely peaceful march, organized by local labor unions. After a few protesters blocked a security gate to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in South Waterfront around 4 p.m., federal agents used tear gas, which drifted for blocks and hit scores of people. Mayor Keith Wilson expressed outrage at the use of force. [OPB]
To those who continue to make these sickening decisions, go home, look in a mirror, and ask yourselves why you have gassed children.
Decline After Affordable Care Act Subsidies
With the end of federal subsidies, there was a 15% drop in the number of Oregonians purchasing private health insurance through the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace. That’s about 21,000 fewer people with insurance — at least through ACA. [Oregonian]
Nike Workers Say Company Isn’t Paying Well
In Indonesia, Nike’s second-largest production hub, the company isn’t living up to its promise to pay double the minimum wage. The Oregonian interviewed 100 Indonesian factory workers from 10 plants and none said they made anywhere near that much. A union official used English to explain his reaction to the claim: “bullshit.” [Oregonian]
Trump Blamed for the End of an Acclaimed Restaurant
República was Portland’s first Mexican-influenced fine dining restaurant. In fact, it made Portland Monthly’s recent list of the 25 restaurants that have defined our city’s food. But now it’s closing later this month — on Feb. 21. The owner cited a 30% dropoff in business after the election of President Trump and concern for staff since the Trump administration’s immigration crackdowns began. [Portland Monthly]
