What's CITY Talking About
Push for Urgency on Fuel Storage Risk
A new City Hall plan would reduce the amount of fuel stored in Northwest Portland’s industrial hub over the next decade — by 20%. But environmental groups, tribal leaders, and neighbors are pushing the city to do more — and start addressing the risks now. There are more than 400 fuel tanks along the Willamette River — an area where soil is likely to liquefy in the event of a major earthquake, causing explosions and spilling fuel. [Oregonian]
OHSU’s Transgender Care Continues in Face of Trump Ban
President Trump last week proposed new rules that prohibit federal funding for any institution that provides gender-affirming health care to minors. If the rules go into effect, that would be a major challenge for Oregon Health & Science University, which gets half its funding from the federal government and has a prominent transgender health care program. OHSU president Dr. Shereef Elnahal said last week he’s working to be “maximally supportive” of the LGBTQ+ community. [Willamette Week]
Flu Shots Recommended Again
About 5% fewer Oregonians are vaccinated against the flu this year, and Oregon health officials are urging everyone above 6 months of age to get the annual shot ahead of the holidays. It’s not clear how effective this year’s vaccine will be against a new strain of flu that’s circulating, but public health officials say the shot will help reduce the spread of the disease and the severity of illness. - Tip: If you need an added incentive to get vaccinated, CVS is offering a $10 coupon for use on any $20 purchase if you get your shots there (through Dec. 31). I stumbled across this deal when I recently got a COVID shot.
A New Union at City Hall
City Council staff have opted to unionize, citing “significant instability” as Portland has shifted to a new form of government. "I am a strong believer in unions, and support every worker's right to form a union," said Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney. "That doesn't stop at my staff or any Council staff."
