🚁 Coast Guard helicopter ordered back to Newport base

November 26, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Happy nose day — to those who celebrate! 🎄 It’s an unofficial start to the holiday season when the stag on the Portland sign gets a red nose on the day before Thanksgiving ⚡

Of course, others look for the giant martini light display in the West Hills, which went up for the season on Monday 🍸

What's CITY Talking About

ICE Detains 17-Year-Old US Citizen

U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement agents detained a U.S. citizen and McMinnville High School student, sparking protests as well as criticism from U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D., Ore.). ICE tweeted on Monday that the 17-year-old “used his vehicle to violently ATTACK ICE and Border Patrol agents.” The Oregonian reports that “it is not uncommon for the federal agency to defend its actions by describing the behavior of people it arrests as dangerous.” [Oregonian]

Helicopter Ordered Back to Base

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to immediately return a Coast Guard rescue helicopter to Newport, Ore., where it’s been stationed since 1987. “Newport fishermen and the community at large will face serious danger due to the lack of rescue helicopter coverage,” wrote U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken. There’s speculation that the helicopter had been moved to make space for a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility at the Newport municipal airport, though ICE has yet to confirm interest in the location. Temporary Solution for Tsunami Warnings

Tsunami warnings will continue for now. The Alaska Earthquake Center will pay for sending out the alerts after federal cuts threatened their continuation. However, the center won’t be paying for maintenance at nine critical and remote seismic stations, so the alerts could be impacted once those go offline. [Oregonian]

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and finding gifts for everyone on your list can be overwhelming. To make things easier and more exciting, we asked our City Cast hosts and producers to share a shining example of a small business in their city with an online shop. Here’s how you can support small businesses and find a gift for just about everyone:

🐦‍⬛ Portland: Merch from Salty Raven

Get some uniquely Oregon goodies from artist Seasons Kaz Sparks, who designs everything on Salty Raven’s shop and ships to all 50 states, as well as Canada. (They also have three retail locations on the coast — in Tillamook, Cannon Beach, and Astoria.)

“From basic tees and hoodies to mugs, glasses, bamboo straws, pour overs — the online catalogue is 57 pages deep!” says City Cast Portland host Claudia Meza. “I think there is something here for quite literally anyone, and her artwork feels very Portland. Salty Raven’s subject matter is exactly what all Portlanders are obsessed with: our natural landscapes. I think her stuff is also really affordable for the quality.”

🥩 Austin: Meat and Merch from Franklin Barbecue

Give the gift of Texas beef from James Beard award-winning Franklin Barbecue — the best in the country, according to Bon Appétit. Or take it from Anthony Bourdain and Barack Obama, who have both made the pilgrimage.

“People line up before dawn just to get the opportunity to eat at Franklin, but why do that when you can have it shipped anywhere in the U.S. through GoldBelly?” says City Cast Austin host Nikki DaVaughn. “You can order everything from rubs, barbecue sauces, merch, and most importantly MEAT. All you have to do is reheat it and you can have something better than dry-ass turkey for the holidays.”

✂️ Chicago: A Collage Magazine from the Chicago Collage Community

For those who love art, the Chicago Collage Community — which just celebrated its third anniversary — has two editions of its collage magazine featuring artists from across Chicagoland.

“One of [Chicago Collage Magazine’s] curators, Lo Marie, is one of my friends and favorite visual artists in the city,” says City Cast Chicago host Jacoby Cochran. “Her current series ‘Windy City Tells’ is a magnificent and evocative series that captures daily life in the city in a unique way.”

🦃 One last bit of giving thanks this month:

“There is a secret Jedi training facility in the Lloyd mall! That place never ceases to surprise these days: Magic shows, pop up art installations, ski swaps, outdoor skills training, roller skate clinics, nonprofit headquarters… [I’ll] be sad when they get the boot for the new renovation.” — reader Mike

“I am grateful for a city whose residents and leaders care about being humane and accepting of people’s rights and liberties.” — reader Amy P.

I’m grateful for all you readers — and especially everyone who has ever written in with contributions. I’ll be back with the next newsletter on the Monday after Thanksgiving!
