🌊 The end of real-time tsunami warnings for Oregon
November 24, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! Last week’s sunny weather was a lovely break ☀️ But we’re now back to the usually scheduled programming for a Portland fall: It’s likely to be rainy all the way through Friday.

What's CITY Talking About
Pushback on Changing Jefferson HS Boundaries
Parents and students are pushing back on the district’s plans to increase enrollment at Jefferson High School by shifting students away from other high schools. Lowering the enrollment at surrounding schools could limit their ability to offer advanced coursework. The Oregonian’s analysis of enrollment data found that’s of particular concern for Roosevelt High School. [Oregonian]
New $70M Investment in Albina
The 1803 Fund — the social justice organization backed by Nike founder Phil Knight — is now the owner of seven acres of property, including a former grain elevator, on the east side of the Willamette River. The fund spent $70 million on this latest acquisition. “These are thousand-year investments,” CEO Rukaiyah Adams said in a statement. “We are investing in Albina not as an artifact of the past, but as a promise to the future.” [Willamette Week]
End of Real-Time Tsunami Warnings
Federal budget cuts will end real-time tsunami warnings in Oregon, Washington, and elsewhere by next month. The Trump administration canceled a $300,000 grant to the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Alaska Earthquake Center, ending monitoring at nine of its seismic stations. [KOIN]

Roses and Thorns

Every day in November, I’ve been including something to appreciate about Portland (usually in the sign-off message to the newsletter). Today’s comes from food writer, chef, and “Food Friends” podcast host Sonya Sanford:
🎨 Rainy Days at Portland Art Museum
“I am so thrilled that the Portland Art Museum has finished their big construction project and has had this grand reopening. A membership to the Portland Art Museum is one of the best deals in town. I always get a guest membership, so it can be me and any guest I want, and there's so many days when it's just rainy, but you still want to hop downtown. I love that I can pop in literally any weekend of the year. I just love the art museum.”
Current exhibits include:
🫑 The Calm Winter Months at the PSU Farmers Market
“My favorite thing in Portland always is the Portland Farmers Market on Saturdays at PSU. I'm especially grateful for it in the colder months, because it's a year-round market, and I'm so sad that all these wonderful neighborhood markets are no longer with us — they all tend to shut down in October.
“What I love about it in the winter, too, is it's calmer. There isn't that fervor and that sort of competitive shopping that’s like, ‘Who's gonna get the best berries?’ All of that is gone, and instead it's just people who really love to be there and really are nerds about local produce, which I am unabashedly a nerd about. So I can't imagine a Saturday morning without the market. It's just such a temple to me.
“You start to really meet the people, not just the vendors, but the other people shopping. And there's something about feeling integrated into the city with the people growing the things that are nourishing us, with the people who are passionate about what makes Oregon so special. That's why I love being there. It fills my cup, literally and figuratively.”

Checking Out Cookbooks From Public Libraries
“We don't talk enough about how great the Portland libraries are — and how integral they are in the city. [I love] the fact that any book that I'm ever interested in, I can order. I especially love checking out cookbooks, because obviously I'm an avid cook. The Portland library system makes it so easy to check things out, to make special orders, to get people what they want, and it's just to me one of the happiest places in the city. Literally every library. I just love stepping in.”
📲 Your turn: What do you love about Portland right now? (I’ll share your appreciation for our city in an upcoming newsletter.)
