Good morning, Portland! The government shutdown looks likely to end soon, maybe even today. But expect the air travel headaches to linger afterward as airlines dig out from under all the canceled flights.

US Sen. Wyden on the End of the Government Shutdown and More
National news has been having a major impact on Portland recently. Last week, a federal court blocked President Trump’s troop deployment to Portland, while the administration first suspended SNAP food benefits before being forced to restore them by another federal judge. This week, the Senate voted to end the federal government shutdown. U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden has been tracking those issues and more. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
A Possible ICE Facility on the Coast
The municipal airport in Newport, Ore., may be top of the list for a new Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, city officials have said, as rumors swirl. Federal officials have declined to say whether they’re looking at Newport. But the U.S. Coast Guard, which has long used the airport, recently moved a rescue helicopter to a new station 100 miles south, sparking additional concerns about water safety during crabbing season. City Hall Fight Over Homelessness Dollars
Over the weekend, Mayor Keith Wilson sent an email blast to constituents, warning “your neighborhood livability (is) at risk.” He was objecting to a proposal by Councilor Angelita Morillo to cut $4.3 million from the program that conducts camp cleanups (commonly known as sweeps) and instead fund housing, food assistance, refugee support, among other areas. City Council is expected to vote on the budget question today. [Oregonian]
