🏥 Oregon senators rejected the shutdown deal
November 11, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! We’re getting another break in the rain today ☀️ Phew!

What's DC Talking About
Oregon Senators Against Shutdown-Ending Deal
U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley (D., Ore.) voted against the deal to reopen the federal government. They were among the Democrats holding out to prevent health care costs from skyrocketing. The Republican leaders of the Senate agreed to hold a health care vote in December, though it is unlikely to be taken up by the U.S. House. [Associated Press via OPB]
Gov. Kotek Signed the Transportation Bill
Just two days before the deadline, Gov. Tina Kotek signed the $4.3 billion transportation bill passed by the Legislature in September. The governor purposefully ran down the clock on the bill signing, so that opponents would have less time to repeal it. Opponents can now start gathering the 78,000 signatures needed for a ballot referral. If they succeed in meeting the Dec. 30 deadline, the tax won’t take effect until voters have a chance to weigh in. [OPB]
ICE Facility’s Latest Protesters
In the latest bit of lighthearted antics, Portland protesters in ’80s-style aerobics outfits held a “Sweatin’ Out the Fascists” event on Sunday, demonstrating with an old-school exercise routine. The protests outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility remain relatively uneventful, though there was at least one clash over the weekend between protesters and counterprotesters, with Portland Police making an arrest.
