What's DC Talking About

Fire Causes Damage at City Councilor Avalos’ Home

On Sunday, a fire damaged City Councilor Candace Avalos' home and cars; she escaped unharmed with her cat. It’s not clear what caused the fire, but investigators said yesterday that they don’t believe the fire was meant to target her. In 2024, a car outside City Commissioner Rene Gonzalez’s house was set on fire, but no one was ever apprehended after that arson investigation. [Oregonian]

Police Crackdown at ICE Facility

On Saturday, Portland Police began enforcing low-level violations against protesters at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. They ordered protesters' tents and supplies to be cleared from the sidewalk. Police gave notice that other offenses such as drinking or doing drugs in public and jaywalking would be part of a crackdown in coming days. [Oregonian]

A Dire Case of PPS Budget Cuts

A class of 30 students in Portland’s Vietnamese immersion program has been left with only one first-grade teacher — who isn’t fluent in English. The Portland Public Schools’ dual immersion programs traditionally operate with two teachers, one fluent in English and one in the foreign language. Parents at Rose City Park Elementary say the current setup isn’t working, but the district hasn’t fixed the problem. [Willamette Week]
