A ruling on Portland troop deployments could come today

October 24, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, the city is outdoing itself in its own special way: There’s yoga with snakes at a local reptile shop, which is featured in our weekly scavenger hunt (below) 🐍

Plus, one of our City Cast Portland Neighbors is the Winterhawks announcer, and he alerted us to the start of their 50th anniversary season: a Saturday game against the Saskatoon Blades. “Can't make it? Don't fret! On Sunday, we host the Victoria Royals, so there is plenty of Hawkey to choose from this weekend,” writes Michael. (Nice pun, Michael!)

You can check out other ideas for the next few days in our events listing ⬇️

Next Up on Troop Deployments

On the Friday news roundup, there’s yet another hearing today on the troop deployment case. The local judge who initially blocked President Trump’s troop deployment will weigh whether to reverse her ruling barring other states’ National Guard from deploying to Oregon — given an appeals court decision allowing the Oregon Guard to deploy. U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut could decide as soon as at today’s hearing. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Food Banks May Be Seeing a New Surge

One in six Oregonians receives food stamp benefits, and could be affected by the pause on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that will start Nov. 1 if the government shutdown continues. More people will be relying on help from food banks, which have already been seeing a rise in people seeking assistance. [OPB]

Congress To Investigate ICE Arrest of American in Portland

More than 170 American citizens across the country have faced immigration arrests. Congressional Democrats are now investigating them, including the alleged arrest of a Milwaukie man at his North Portland job site on Oct. 2. [OPB]

Where Is It?

A well-placed mural. (Stephan Vertal / reader submission)

Last week’s mural is an advertisement for a relatively new store on Northeast Martin Luther King Boulevard: Hisss: The Reptile Shop. (Yes, the third “s” is really part of their name.)

“The mural was created by artist Hannah Webb in celebration of the grand opening in August 2025,” writes reader Heidi F.

“I don’t know anything about the animal on the wall, but I do know that the shop has an in-house tortoise that just wanders around,” wrote reader Asher. “She’s a cutie.”

“They sell reptiles and supplies, and take surrendered animals,” adds reader Lisa Weisman.

“I haven't been inside but I should. I own a 6-foot boa, and reptiles are kinda my area of interest,” writes reader Artemisia L.A.

A shoutout to those readers as well as Marcos O., Rosanne Marmor, and Ryan Floyd, who also identified the location.

🐍 In a city known for its goat yoga events, the shop also has yoga with snakes — tomorrow.

This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Abagail Clark:

Where have you seen this mural?

Please click here to send me the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

⭐ I won’t be going to snake yoga. Instead, I’ll be having brunch with friends.

But I might try to get to the Portland Japanese Garden for the Ikebana International Chrysanthemum Show. (Reminder to keep an eye on the garden's fall foliage tracker, so you can visit at its peak.)
