🐸 Test your knowledge of Portland protests

October 22, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! It’s seeming like a question of when — not if — troops get deployed to Portland after an appeals court ruled for Trump on Monday. But there are some key legal steps between here and the National Guard in the streets. I’ll keep you posted as news develops, but here’s what we know right now 🎧

What's DC Talking About

Federal Officers Accused of Targeting the Weakest

Federal officers at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building have deployed aggressive tactics against protesters who don’t appear to be a physical threat — perhaps most dramatically when it took six agents to drag off a 4-foot-six-inch tall man who is legally blind and carries a cane to navigate. “I think they wanted to make a point,” said Quinn Haberl, 36. “So they picked the weakest person they could find and made a big show out of it.” [Oregonian]

Just 20% of Households Have Cable TV

Multnomah County saw a 60% drop in households with cable TV from 2016 to 2024. Nationally the number has also fallen but remains higher than in Portland; a third of American households still have cable. [Oregonian]

Next Adventure for an Outdoor Store

Next Adventure’s original owners are still headed to retirement, but a group of local investors — as well as former and current employees — have swooped in at the last moment to save the stores in Portland and Sandy from closing. They’ll take over operations on Nov. 1. The paddle store in Portland is still closing, and the paddle store in Scappoose has already reopened under different ownership. [Oregonian]

Portland protesters wearing inflatable animal costumes have become an internationally recognized symbol of resistance to Trump, mocking the president’s exaggerations about a “war-ravaged” city.

It’s not the first time that Portland has captured attention for its protests and resistance.
