💰 Why Kaiser nurses want a 50% pay hike
October 15, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! I’m enjoying the sunshine at the moment ☀️ It’s a nice break, and the dry weather should last through Thursday.

What's DC Talking About
Kaiser Nurses Went on Strike Yesterday
Nearly 45,000 Kaiser workers nationwide are participating in a five-day strike, including about 4,000 nurses and other skilled workers in Southwest Washington and Oregon. The local nurses are seeking a 50% pay increase over the next four years, because they say they’re paid less than nurses at other local hospitals — a charge Kaiser disputes. [OPB]
Lawsuit Related to Blazers’ Sale Settles
The company that owns the Portland Fire and the Portland Thorns has settled a lawsuit against one of the potential new owners of the Portland Trail Blazers. The settlement means there’s now just one remaining key step before the sale of the Blazers: approval from the NBA. [OPB]
I love that we have a Portland chicken, and we have a Portland frog.
Waiting on Court Decisions for Troop Deployment
Portland is still waiting on the appellate court to rule on Trump’s effort to deploy troops here. A hearing will be held today on a longer stay on deployments. Meanwhile protesters got naked and got on their bikes, while others put on a wide array of costumes, dressing as chickens, frogs, and more. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

💪 Over the weekend, 50 volunteers cleaned up an eastside beach along the Willamette River near Duckworth Dock. They removed some 10 to 20 tons of trees, logs, rebar, concrete, and garbage, says Human Access Project director Willie Levenson. Now there’s a pebble beach there that’s more inviting to visitors.
