🐔 An iconic Portland protester with an economics degree
October 14, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! For a lot of Portlanders, fall means two things: rain and mushrooms. There’s a whole culture, etiquette, and even intuition behind mushroom hunting. Norther Emily, founder of Wild Solitude Guiding and a seasoned mushroom forager, shares three mushrooms that are easy to identify and which ones to avoid.

What's DC Talking About
The Iconic Chicken Protester
The protesters at the ICE building have dressed up as animals to keep it lighthearted — and mock the President’s wild exaggerations about war-torn Portland. One man has made headlines while dressed as a chicken with a cape has a degree in economics. “They’re not getting the footage they’re looking for. They look ridiculous,” he said [Willamette Week]

Trail Blazers Sale Could Move Forward
Tom Dundon, who is leading the group buying the Portland Trail Blazers, says the group can afford to move forward even if a lawsuit successfully challenges one of their investors: the founders of Panda Express. They've been accused of violating a confidentiality agreement with a rival bidder for the team. [OPB]
Midyear Job Cuts at Reynolds School District
Reynolds School District cut 117 jobs last spring, and has now notified 62 workers that their jobs could be gone or changed by the end of the month. That’s if the district doesn’t find an alternative solution to its $5.5 million budget shortfall. [Oregonian]

Portland Mailbag

Newsletter readers and podcast listeners had a bunch of suggestions to add to our October guide.
We offered some soup recommendations — and asked for your favorites:
- Onion soup at Papa Haydn and hot & sour soup at Duck House (add wontons) — MLO
- Black bean and onion as well as tomato bisque from the McMenamins St. Johns Theater & Pub — Penny Mclain
Senior producer Giulia Fiaoni asked for recommendations on where to take a class on changing the oil in her car. You answered the callout:
- “I love taking classes with MakeWith — really welcoming classes on all kinds of topics and focused teaching on women/queer folx/BIPOC. I've always felt really comfortable in their classes and they get great experts to teach them! I think the most recent run of the car classes has already passed, but I would guess the fall/winter schedule is coming soon.” — Holly
The guide also included a bunch of horror movies showing at independent theaters. And a reader added to the list:
- “I didn’t hear any mention of CineMagic on Hawthorne, by Ladd's Addition. [Their films this month] include ‘Hocus Pocus,’ ‘American Werewolf in London,’ ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ ‘Killer Klowns from Outerspace,’ and so much more.” — David

This Is the Time of Year When Portland Gets Weird About Mushrooms
Mushroom foraging isn’t just about tromping through the woods and getting lucky; there’s a whole culture, etiquette, and even a kind of intuition behind it. Norther Emily, founder of Wild Solitude Guiding and a seasoned mushroom forager, gets into the art of mushroom hunting, a few that you can easily identify, and which ones you should absolutely not mess with.
Sometimes mushroom hunting really is hunting. Sometimes you are looking for mushrooms and you're not finding them for a long time.
