🍎 How well do you know Oregon apples?
October 9, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! Today we have an apple-packed newsletter, with a timely guide to local orchards along a stretch known as the Fruit Loop, with 30 farms, wineries, and restaurants in the Hood River County countryside.

What's CITY Talking About?
Protesters Moved Away From ICE Building
After her visit, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told FOX News she was demanding that Portland protesters be kept farther away from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building. A wider berth was initially put in place for Noem’s visit, and yesterday local police continued to enforce it. But the mayor is saying he won’t agree to most of the federal demands around the protesters. [Oregonian]
- Related: The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday, continuing to block the deployment of any state’s National Guard troops coming to Portland. They did allow the 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to remain technically under federal control for now, while the legal case continues. The Ninth Circuit will hold a hearing on the issue today. [OPB]
Prominent Chef Dies of Liver Failure
In the 15 years since Justin Woodward moved to Portland, he left his mark on food — as head chef of Castagna and then OK Omens. He died this week at the age of 43. The cause was liver failure. “My brother struggled with alcohol issues in the industry,” Rachel Ruiz, Woodward’s sister, told the Oregonian. “We don’t want people to speculate about his cause of death. We want people to know how serious alcohol can be and to get resources. Even if you don’t feel like you’re sick, it’s doing damage to your body.” [Oregonian]
Another Kind of Help for Households In Need
The local nonprofit Community Warehouse helps 70 households furnish their homes each week, with three different locations around the region, offering everything from couches to measuring cups. They operate off donations and particularly need tables, chairs, sofas, dressers, nightstands, kitchenware, and linens right now. [Oregonian]

Today, Bryan M. Vance of Stumptown Savings is sharing his well-researched guide to getting the most out of a day trip through the Fruit Loop.
🌭 The group behind the Portland Pickles and the Portland Bangers — men’s teams known for their suggestive social media profiles (and names) — is now expanding to bring a women’s soccer team to Portland. So the key question: Are they going to double-down on the double entendre of their team names?
We’ll have to wait and see; they won’t announce the name until next month, but the Oregonian is taking nominations in the meantime.
