What's CITY Talking About?

A Stark Student Achievement Gap Persists

Unlike in other Oregon districts, Portland Public Schools students’ test scores show they’ve broadly made up for pandemic losses. That’s excellent news, but there’s also terrible news once you look deeper into the data: a vast achievement gap persists between the district’s white students and their black and Latino classmates: 71% of white students scored proficient in reading and writing while just 19% of Black students did. Warm Sunny Weather

Today is expected to be the warmest day of the week with temperatures hitting 78 degrees. [KOIN]

Increase in Higher-Earning Jobs

The hospitality industry in Oregon is shrinking, and so is the number of jobs paying less than $15 an hour as the state’s minimum wage climbs (Portland's minimum wage is now $16.30 an hour while the minimum wage in rural Oregon is now $14.05). Minimum wage hikes seem to be helping push pay higher across the board. In fact, the number of Oregon jobs paying $60 an hour or more (equivalent to $125,000 a year) grew by 10% last year.
