📣 Breaking news: Judge blocks Trump’s troop deployment for now
October 4, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Trump can’t deploy troops to Portland for now — a federal judge has ruled, according to local media reports.
It’s a highly anticipated development that the city has been waiting for since Trump first announced the National Guard deployment.
- After a hearing Friday morning, U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut granted the state and city a temporary restraining order on Saturday.
- The order will remain in effect for two weeks, OPB reports.
- Immergut, who was appointed to the bench by Trump, didn’t accept the federal government’s argument that Portland faces a “danger of rebellion,” the Oregonian reports.
- The Trump administration says they’ll immediately appeal the decision, asking the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to put a hold on the decision.
A week ago, Trump announced he was sending in the National Guard to secure U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities from “Antifa.”
- But no more than 30 people were gathering each day in the weeks before Trump’s order — and law enforcement, including the Portland Police, said they did not need backup from a federal force.
- Alarmingly, Trump has been making a case all week to send the military to left-wing cities — and use blue cities as military "training grounds."
