Trump Targeting Portland

On Sunday, Gov. Tina Kotek received notice that President Trump is calling up 200 members of the Oregon National Guard for 60 days of service in Portland. The state and the city of Portland immediately filed a lawsuit to challenge the president’s action: “The facts cannot justify this overreach,” says the suit. [Oregonian]

  • On Saturday: Trump took to Truth Social to say he was sending “Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.” [Oregonian]
  • Also Saturday: Gov. Tina Kotek spoke to President Trump. Afterwards, she told reporters she was “trying to understand his rationale, and I believe it is based on information that is not accurate today.” Trump may be thinking about Portland’s 2020 protests. [Willamette Week]
  • Related: In recent days, fewer than 30 protesters were showing up at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in South Portland. After Trump’s announcement, the protests grew: 2,000 people marched through downtown to condemn the president’s actions. [Oregonian]

A correction before I go: a news summary on Friday incorrectly stated TriMet’s ridership. It’s down, but not what I wrote. It’s at 70% of pre-pandemic levels. I regret the error.
