🦺 New earthquake advice for old buildings
September 25, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! At City Cast Portland, we believe life here can be full of joy. While we are going to critique Portland’s many flaws, we are equally committed to celebrating what’s truly amazing — from scenic hikes to excellent food.
If you also want to enjoy our city too — and discover hidden gems, celebrate wins, and support local businesses — then City Cast Portland Neighbors is perfect for you. Our membership program is designed to help you engage more deeply with life in our city — in a way that’s easy and fun — including our exclusive weekly events preview and our members-only events.
And if you join during our fall membership campaign, you’ll also get our brand-new Neighbors Make Portland tote bag.

What's CITY Talking About?
Lawsuit Over the Blazers
The owners of the Portland Thorns and Portland Fire bid on the Portland Trail Blazers — and are now suing to block the wealthy founders of Panda Express from joining the rival investor group that successfully reached a deal to buy the team. On Monday, RAJ Sports Holding LLC filed a lawsuit in Delaware over a breach of confidentiality. It’s unclear what impact the legal action will have on the sale. [Oregonian]
New Earthquake Advice
Some leading experts say that students (and anyone else) should evacuate from old buildings in the event of an earthquake — rather than the traditional “drop, cover, and hold on.” Major earthquakes are often preceded by a minute of light shaking, says University of Oregon professor emeritus Chris Goldfinger — which should be a sign to evacuate from unreinforced masonry buildings. Most Portland-area schools still have a plan to use the traditional take-cover approach. [Oregonian]

Your Guide to the Fall Arts Scene
The Portland Art Museum is getting a shiny new pavilion. But also there are pro-wrestling-inspired improv comedy, and zinesters at the mall. Here’s what you don’t want to miss in the Portland art world this fall. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
