Hello, Friday! I’m looking forward to this weekend ☀️ If you’re still looking for things to do, Idiocracy is showing tonight. You could take a stroll and visit Snack Fest tomorrow (when the weather is still sunny), or catch the Food Court 5000 (if it gets rainy on Sunday). ICE in Trouble With the City

On the Friday news roundup, the city of Portland now says that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement violated an agreement not to house detainees overnight or for more than 12 hours and, in doing that, may have violated city code. Ultimately, the city might try to kick ICE out of its South Waterfront location, using land use policy. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Tom Hanks Sent a Typewriter to Portland

Typewriter enthusiast and Hollywood actor Tom Hanks stopped by the Portland shop Type Space two years ago. Back then, Hanks bought a $175 Underwood Leader and promised the owner a typewriter from his personal collection. A 1955 Rheinmetall (with a German keyboard — the Z and Y keys are in the opposite locations) arrived this week and is available for customers to try out, though it’s not for sale. [KGW]

Intel’s Good News

Intel’s stock price rose more than 20% in the hours after the company announced a $5 billion investment from Nvidia, the leading computer chip maker for AI technology. It’s a hopeful moment for Intel, which did not have a foot in the AI market. [Oregonian]

Where Is It?

This alley has a lot of smiles. (MH / reader submission)

“It’s called Happy Alley, a beautiful renovation by an awesome neighbor to help bring joy to the community,” writes reader MW.

It’s located next to T.C. O’Leary’s on the south side of Northeast Alberta Street (between 29th and 30th Avenues).

“That's my friend's alley,” writes reader Leah S. “He wanted to beautify the alley behind his house. I think there's a lot of kids in the neighborhood, and wanted to make it fun. Apparently he's not quite done with the project yet!”

A shoutout to both of those readers — MW and Leah S. — who knew last week’s spot.

This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Lisa Aubin.

Where is this mural?

Please click here to send me the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

Walla Walla: What are you waiting for?

Walla Walla: What are you waiting for?

Washington’s Walla Walla Valley is one of the prettiest and tastiest vacation meccas in the West, full of wineries, tasting rooms, great restaurants, shops and open roads. If you’re thinking about a romantic escape, a friend’s long weekend or a family reunion, great thinking. Come! And experience it for yourself!

Renaming Oregon places: A few years ago, Oregon renamed Swastika Mountain after two teens got lost in the wilderness there and the ongoing existence of the offensive name got media attention. (It’s now Mount Halo.)

Instead of an ad hoc approach to updating names, the state is now taking a systematic approach to the derogatory names still on the Oregon map — there are 91, by the official count.

📲 The public is invited to submit replacement names — which need to be relatively easy to pronounce and, if a person’s name, must be someone with a connection to the place and who has been dead at least five years.
