What's CITY Talking About?

Layoffs at Powell’s

The iconic bookstore Powell’s has been laying off workers since July. In the last three months, 18 Powell’s workers have lost their jobs. [KOIN]

  • Related: Powell’s downtown location, which generates most of the company’s revenue, has not recovered to its pre-pandemic level of sales. [Portland Business Journal 🔒]

Mayor Threatens Portland With Trump Crackdown

An email from Mayor Keith Wilson took an odd approach to soliciting donations for nonprofits that are running the city’s shelters: Wilson suggested President Trump might send troops if the city doesn’t fix the homelessness crisis on the streets. [Oregonian]

My takeaway is having outside investment companies owning huge chunks of our downtown sucks.

Storefronts Up for Sale

On the City Cast Portland podcast’s Friday news roundup, a real estate investment company is selling the 44 storefronts it owns in the Pearl District. That represents 95,430 square feet across 10 residential buildings. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

MLK mural in black and white
A mural from 2020 that’s located at 627 N. Tillamook St. (Mark E. McClure)

“This mural of MLK Jr. was created by artist Shane Grammer,” wrote Heidi F., who was the one reader to identify the spot this week.

If you’re curious, that door was there before the Eliot neighborhood mural.

This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Babs:

Mural of basketball player in shorts and nikes, bare chest holding his arms above his head against a skyline backdrop
Weight of the world. (Babs / reader submission)

Where is this mural?

Please click here to send me the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

Neighborhood Shoutouts

Each week, we’re hearing about favorite local spots and organizations from City Cast Portland Neighbors. It’s a member benefit, but it’s also a great way to get to know our city:

  • The Water Bureau | “Fresh, clean, and daily goodness from Bull Run. All right-y-tight. Great drip!” — Riley G.
  • Salmonberry Trail Foundation | "Some day Oregonians of all ages will enjoy walking or rolling all the way to the coast on a beautiful rail-trail. Shout out to the Salmonberry Trail Foundation and their amazing work making this vision a reality! — Will H.
  • Curious Comedy Club | Northeast Martin Luther King Boulevard | “Changed my life taking improv classes there. This engineer learned more about myself than how to talk in front of people. The teachers are amazing; they are so caring and inclusive. Plus, don’t worry if you don’t think you are funny. They teach you how to bring it out.” — Brooke W.

🔥 Lewis & Clark College is picking a new mascot. Ditching the Pioneers — and the association with displacing Indigenous peoples — they have whittled down their options to eight possibilities. (Somehow none of them have any connection to wildfires.) Among my favorite options are the River Otters, Heron, and Lynx.
