Good morning, friends! The National Weather Service has extended the extreme heat warning through 11 p.m. tonight, but thankfully there’s slightly cooler weather the rest of the week. As of this writing, Multnomah County cooling centers are not open, but the county website offers some heat safety tips.

A Fresh Start for Jefferson High

Modernization plans for Jefferson High School in North Portland are estimated to be completed by 2029 to the tune of $465 million. The school is getting a new campus, upgraded track and field facilities, a new theater, and new attendance boundaries. The school district said it will also rename the school. [Oregonian 🔒]

Street Takeover Troubles Continue

Portland Police said it carried out a 10-hour crackdown of a planned street racing takeover Saturday night that resulted in two arrests, but street racing resumed shortly after the operation ended. Police continued enforcement Sunday night, when people participating in a takeover allegedly threw fireworks at patrol cars — no injuries were reported. [KPTV]

‘Mom-and-Pop’ Fuel Downtown Resurgence

As big box stores continue to leave downtown, small businesses like Drip Drop Coffee and All Burn Wax have been leading the gradual resurgence of the area. Owners say they’re hopeful business will continue to grow and encourage residents to support downtown shops. [Oregonian 🔒]

A Boost for Portland Arts

The Oregon Community Foundation announced the recipients of its annual Creative Heights grant, which awards a total of $1 million to local arts organizations. The money will be distributed to 14 creative projects, including 10 nonprofits in the Portland area. [Willamette Week]
