Coffee Prices Spike

On the Friday news roundup, wholesale coffee prices have doubled in the last year — because of President Trump’s tariffs, inflation, and droughts in coffee-producing countries. That’s unwelcome news to Portland’s many coffee drinkers, who are now paying more and can expect prices to continue to climb. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

ICE Protests Push Out Neighboring School

The Cottonwood charter school — previously located adjacent to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in South Waterfront — has moved downtown after chemicals and munitions from the law enforcement response to protests landed on school grounds. It's not the first time they've been affected by demonstrations; after the 2020 protests, school officials had to engage in a major cleanup of its grounds. [KGW]

Artist Jason Sturgill created this smiling peace sign for The Hoxton hotel. A shoutout to reader Heidi F., who knew the mural and its location, as well as reader Lisa R., who identified the artist.

Photographer Mark E. McClure, whose pictures have regularly illustrated this newsletter, suggested this week’s scavenger hunt:

Where is this distinctive glass?

Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
