Kotek Says Sanctuary Laws Are Staying

Gov. Tina Kotek sent a response letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi rejecting claims that the state’s laws obstruct federal immigration enforcement, adding that Oregon is not under obligation to perform the federal government’s job. Bondi threatened legal action against Oregon and other states last week if so-called sanctuary laws were not repealed. [Oregonian]

Signature Festivals Ask for Permanent Discounts

Portland Parks & Recreation waived park usage fees for the Rose Festival and the Waterfront Blues Festival this year to alleviate post-pandemic financial burdens, and now both organizations are asking the city to make the cost relief permanent — together they pay nearly $330,000 in annual fees. City leadership said it was a one-time thing, but negotiations are ongoing. [KATU]

Southern Oregon Giant in Peril

Firefighters say they’re hopeful they’ll be able to save the iconic Doerner Fir in Coos County after it caught fire over the weekend. The Doerner Fir Recreation Area will remain closed until further notice. At 325-feet tall, it is one of the tallest trees in the world. [OPB]
