⛺ Tough question on Portland mayor’s shelter plan
August 14, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! We’re a town that loves a good deal on a great meal. One of our favorites is Otto’s Pizza happy hour/lunch deal (available until 5 p.m.) — $9 for a large margherita pizza. (A shoutout to Bryan M. Vance, founder of Stumptown Savings, for that suggestion.)
So what are your favorite cheap eats? Please share your recommendations. We’ll be including our picks on an upcoming City Cast Portland podcast episode.

What's DC Talking About
Trail Blazers Sold
The Portland Trail Blazers have found a new owner, who intends to keep the team in town, the Oregonian reported. Tom Dundon, who owns a National Hockey League team, heads the new ownership group, which also includes Portland-based venture capital executive Sheel Tyle. The NBA will need to approve the deal for the sale before it moves forward. [Oregonian]
New Questions About Mayor’s Shelter Plan
Portland City Council members expressed concern about Mayor Keith Wilson’s plan to create enough shelters to house everyone on the streets. Councilor Angelita Morillo said the city is failing to address the need for long-term housing, given that the mayor is looking to rapidly house people who seek shelter. [OPB]
- Related: At the same time, Councilor Eric Zimmerman said the city needs to enforce the camping ban in neighborhoods where shelters are located. That ban, which allows for fines or jail time, hasn’t been enforced since February. [OPB]
Jim & Patty’s Coffee Is Reopening
The cafe, which first opened in 2002 and closed last year after financial difficulties, returned to its Northeast Fremont location yesterday. Paperwork filed with the state shows that Paul Ceserani, a minority owner in the original Jim & Patty’s, has ties to the new version of the business. [Oregonian]
- Related: A new floating restaurant has opened off of Marine Drive. Sabor Del Río, which translates as flavor of the river, serves Puerto Rican cuisine. [Oregonian]
