🍔 Burger Week, Bridge Pedal, and Jamie xx
August 8, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! I may try to escape the heat this weekend with a quick trip to the coast.
But there’s plenty going on in town too. Jamie xx is performing at Pioneer Courthouse Square tonight 🚲 The annual bridge pedal is Sunday. And Burger Week starts Monday. More ideas for you below ⬇️

What's CITY Talking About?
Trump Calls for Intel CEO’s Resignation
Intel stocks are down (again), this time after President Trump called for the new Intel CEO’s immediate resignation. Trump’s remarks come after U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton wrote to Intel’s chairman questioning CEO Lip-Bu Tan’s possible investments in semiconductor firms linked to the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army. [AP via OPB]
Big Pink’s Lower Property Tax Bill
Property taxes for the U.S. Bancorp building could drop by $1.2 million after the building recently sold for 14% of its 2015 sale price. It’s one indication that local and regional governments are going to see less tax revenue as downtown’s post-pandemic real estate values continue to falter. [Oregonian 🔒]
A big problem that we've had in Portland for a long time was it felt like there was no accountability for bad behavior on the roads.
An Increase in Traffic Cameras
On the Friday news roundup, the city has been removing cameras used to enforce speed limits and red lights. But it’s just because they’re switching vendors — and the city is planning to increase the number of cameras as part of an effort to make streets safer. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

I thought last week’s scavenger hunt might stump everyone. But a bunch of readers knew the location:
“That's up on Northeast 42nd and Killingsworth in the Cully neighborhood,” wrote reader Jody Anderson. “It was painted by youth sponsored by Native American Youth and Family. It's really gorgeous.”
“Used to be a Mexican food restaurant named Ole Frijole,” wrote reader Marcos. “Closed in 2024 after two decades of serving food. In the 70s, it was the location of Mr. Burger, Arctic Circle, and before that a gas station.”
“That's across the street from Santo Domingo Taqueria! One of the more authentic taco spots in town,” wrote reader Joel MN.
A shoutout to the first 10 readers who correctly identified the location: Evita M., Kathleen, Kate R., Melissa Thoresen, Sharon B., Hester, LauraGooGoo, Allie M., Jody Anderson, and Titus Gunstone.
This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Sandy Christenson:

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — bonus points if you share a story about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first few readers who guess correctly.
📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email us a snapshot of a spot in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
