👂 Why drones are blasting AC/DC at Oregon wolves

August 7, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! It was gray and a little rainy yesterday, but summer is far from over. A heatwave is on the way, beginning Monday. Temperatures could hit 100 degrees.

What's CITY Talking About?

Unpleasant Noise, Instead of Shooting Wolves

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is blasting AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” from drones to scare wolves away from cattle in Southern Oregon as well as California. They’re also playing the sound of Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver’s argument in the Oscar-nominated movie “Marriage Story.” [Oregonian]

We know that there will be challenges that arise in every neighborhood. …So we’re committed to being listeners and hearing directly from community members about what they’re experiencing as the shelter goes into place, and then working through those challenges together.
Brandy Westerman, City of Portland's director of Emergency Humanitarian Operations

Shelter Bed Updates

Mayor Keith Wilson’s ambitious plan will add 1,500 shelter beds, but neighborhoods will feel the impact, acknowledges Brandy Westerman, Portland's Emergency Humanitarian Operations director, who oversees all the city’s shelter programs. She shares what you can expect if a new overnight shelter opens in your neighborhood — including the city's careful attention to trash pickup, graffiti removal, and sidewalk cleaning. 🍸 After Ours, a new listening bar serving Vietnamese-flavored cocktails, opened yesterday. You can peruse the vinyl, listen at your own personal station, and drink a lychee martini, yuzu-oolong whiskey sour, or pandan colada. (Earlier in the day, brunch is on offer, including banh mi avocado toast.) It’s a joint effort from the owners of Mémoire Cà Phê and Deadstock Coffee.
