What's DC Talking About

Tsunami Warning Turns Into Practice Run

A tsunami warning on the Oregon Coast — sparked by a massive earthquake on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula — proved to be only a practice run for evacuating low-lying areas. But it prompted two Democratic lawmakers to call for an investment in the state’s emergency response center— to keep it up and running 24/7 and to improve the training facility for first responders. Glass Recycling Will Continue After Layoffs

Where Is It?

New artwork now decorates the recently renovated library. (Heidi Franklin / reader submission)

Last month, the newly expanded Albina Library reopened after years of renovation. One of the historic Carnegie libraries, it’s now Multnomah County’s second-largest library. This is a spot a few readers have already had a chance to visit:

“I helped paint that mural with my dear friend, local muralist superstar Daren Todd!” wrote reader Teeny.

“Such a beautiful space!” wrote reader Lisa R.

Shoutout to the readers who identified the spot: Deanna S-O., Tracy, Julia P., Judy R., and David Sloan., as well as Lisa R. and Teeny.

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Stephan Vertal:

mural that reads "power to the people" and "no one is illegal on stolen land"

Where is this mural?

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — bonus points if you share a story about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first few readers who guess correctly.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email us a snapshot of a spot in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
