🗓️ Governor Calls Back Lawmakers to Avoid Layoffs

Gov. Tina Kotek announced a special session of the Legislature beginning on August 29 to secure funding for the Oregon Department of Transportation and avoid laying off nearly 500 employees. There are no details yet on a funding proposal, but Kotek has hinted at a short-term tax increase. [Oregonian]

🚧 The City Spent Millions During Construction Pause

Portland spent $80 million during the four months it paused construction of a water filtration plant, including $1.7 million during ongoing legal challenges from residents. Work has resumed, but it has a tight 2027 deadline to finish the plant and start processing from the Bull Run watershed. [KATU]

🤔 Can Portland Shut Down ICE Facility?

A group of activists is urging Portland City Council to revoke the conditional land use permit for a South Waterfront detention center operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement — an online petition has gathered nearly 17,000 signatures. The permit only covers a 5,000-square-foot facility within a large office complex, but some officials say they might not have the power to revoke it. [Oregonian 🔒 ]

🛒 Why a Northeast Fred Meyer Is Closing

On today’s midweek roundup, parent company Kroger said it’s closing at least 60 stores nationwide, including the Fred Meyer location at Gateway Center. The store will shut down sometime after late September and the company said it will offer its 250 employees an opportunity to transfer to other locations. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
