July 22, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

What's CITY Talking About?

Births Outnumber Deaths in Metro Area

Some rural parts of Oregon have twice as many deaths as births, meaning the populations there will decline over time. But in Multnomah and Washington counties, births still outnumber deaths. [Oregonian 🔒]

The Impact of Intel

High tech companies like Intel help create about four or five local jobs for every one they hire, but now the company has laid off a record number of workers. On the bright side, Washington County officials say so far the company has not sold off real estate, so they can continue to expect a stable base of property tax revenues. [OPB]

The action that genuinely would help people’s health is so, so different from what the city is actually doing in those situations.

We asked for recommendations for the best breakfast sandwiches around — for last week’s City Cast Portland podcast.

Here are some of the suggestions from your fellow readers:

“Watershed Cafe, thick bacon and sun dried tomato coulis” — Rara

“Dawnbringer is the best breakfast sandwich in town. They’re pleasant and quick with your orders. Eggs are fluffy on their house made English muffins and comes with bacon AND sausage standard. And their drip coffee is DELICIOUS. I may go 2 or more times a week!” — Michael Stevenson Jr.

“Meat Cheese Bread's smoked ham sandwich with the egg. The homemade bun is perfect for sopping up runny egg yolk, and ham & gruyere is a perfect combo.” — Emily H.

“The Woodlawn Breakfast Sandwich at P's & Q's Market in Woodlawn is fantastic! It has a wonderful flavor that makes it both familiar and a little different.” — Ken P

“The Barbarian from Spunky Monkey Coffee Kitchen (on Southwest Barbur Boulevard). It has two eggs, cheese, crispy bacon, and a house made parmesan peppercorn sauce on a large everything bagel. For $7, the price can’t be beat.” — Callie S

“Fried Egg I'm in Love is yet to be defeated. Huevo Mutilation for the win.” — Neal Weiss

“The Heartless Artichoke at Tin Shed Cafe & Garden. It's my favorite because it's served on grilled sourdough and has an ooey-gooey warm melty cheese center combined with artichoke hearts. It's beyond amazing on the crunch meter and makes my taste buds sing!” — Kathryn M

“Sunrise Co! You can't beat the homemade English muffins (they're huge).” — Sara

“The Grilled Ham at Fressen. Tasty German flavors, not too gigantic and overwhelming, and a pretty unbeatable price.” — Brae

“I love Bentley’s Bagels' NY-style poppy seed bagel with your classic bacon, egg, and cheddar. What I love about Bentley’s is that you can have your egg fried over easy, medium, or hard. Not a fan of the egg ‘patty’ served at other places.” — Shannon

“My go-to favorite has got to be The Great North on West Burnside. What makes it my favorite is the chimichurri sauce. It's unique and bright and complements the Olympia provisions ham so well. Not to mention they use Dos Hermanos bread. You can't go wrong.” — April R.

“Picones Quality Deli — their BEC on a roll is amazing! The closest I've found to what I would get in NYC.” — James Bolo

“Bialy Bird!! It’s such a hidden gem of Portland, the ability to mix and match Bialy flavors to sandwich insides is the joy of my weekend.” — Darcy

“I love the reuben breakfast sandwich at Fehrenbacher Hof — hidden gem! Egg, cheese, tomato, corned beef with reuben sauce — best hangover food ever!” — PDM
