Good morning! ☀️ We’re back to slightly more pleasant weather today — with a high in the upper 80s. But climate change means that Portland will see 90-degree days more often than we might want.

Portland’s ‘Hot Socialist Summer’

Portland is at the forefront of the “hot socialist summer” — as the only major city in America where a third of the City Council are socialists. And that leftwing bloc on City Council is impacting the local agenda in key ways, alarming downtown business interests and even sparring with the governor on her efforts to reduce taxes on high-income Portland residents. [Willamette Week]

Trump Tax Bill Halts a Local Streets Project

After the Trump tax bill passed, the city announced plans to halt a $38 million project to fix up North and Northeast Broadway between 7th Avenue and the Broadway Bridge, citing the likelihood that the city would lose its funding. A provision of the bill appears to claw back money that hasn’t been sent out to grant recipients of the Neighborhood Access and Equity Grant program, including for work related to the Rose Quarter. Release Ordered After First Arrest at Immigration Court

A federal judge has ordered the immediate release of a transgender woman from Mexico, who is seeking asylum and was the first person arrested outside federal immigration court in Portland this year. U.S. District Court Judge Amy Baggio found that the woman had been “actively misled” in agreeing to drop her previous immigration case. [Willamette Week]
