👀 Exploring intriguingly weird stuff in the woods
July 16, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! 🌲 Even if you’d never get tired of hiking through epically scenic landscapes, there’s some intriguingly weird stuff to explore out in Pacific Northwest forests — including ghost towns, abandoned bridges, and trash heaps with antique cars 🎧

What's DC Talking About
New WNBA Team Name Is Old News
The city’s new WNBA team will be called the Portland Fire — that’s the same name used by Portland’s last WNBA team, which played here from 2000 to 2002. [OPB]
Looking Back on a Big Story on the Big One
It’s been ten years since the New Yorker story highlighting the threat of an inevitable Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. Writer Kathryn Schulz recalled being surprised by the impact of her story. “I was actually shocked by the extent to which the world received it as terrifying,” she said. “I thought a lot more about tragedy.” [Willamette Week]
- Related: “Everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast,” outgoing Federal Emergency Management Agency official Kenneth Murphy told the New Yorker back then.

Intel’s Unprecedented Cuts
Intel has gone through downturns before, but it’s never cut as many workers, with 5,400 layoffs since last August. The number of Intel employees in Oregon is now below 18,000 — lower than it’s been in a decade. And insiders even say more layoffs are coming. [Oregonian]
- Related: That could have a major impact on the local economy. Intel has been the state’s largest corporate employer, and many of the jobs were in technical fields where the average pay is $180,000 a year. [Oregonian]
