✈️ ‘Practically a nature bath’
June 27, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! ✈️ Our airport is “practically a nature bath,” according to the Washington Post, which rated PDX the no. 1 airport in the country. 🧘 The newspaper gave major props to the new roof: “This space is — it’s hard to believe — relaxing.” 🌲

What's CITY Talking About?
Transportation Bill Would Now Raise $11.6B
Democrats have overhauled the transportation bill in the 11th hour of the legislative session, scrapping a tax on new cars and scaling back an increase in the gas tax. It’s unclear whether they’ll have the necessary Republican cooperation to pass the bill before the legislative session ends on Sunday night. [OPB]
Few Used New Sobering Beds
Only 26 people have used the 13 sobering beds that Multnomah County opened in April. Only police were able to bring people in, but now Portland Street Response, Portland Fire and Rescue, and some nonprofits will be able to refer people. [Oregonian]
A lot of times we talk about Portland government being nonsensical. This seems sensical.
Tree Enforcement Down $2M
On the Friday news roundup, City Council slashed the amount of money available for the team in charge of enforcing the city’s tree regulations — and moved the team out of the parks bureau and into the Portland Permitting & Development department, which handles all permitting. Where Is It?

The Family Ties statue is in downtown Gresham, outside the Gresham Historical Society on Main Street.
“Walking by this statue weekly, my pups like to say hello and check out the shoe tying progress.” wrote reader Bonnie A.
Two other readers also knew the spot: Mark McClure and Heidi Franklin.

In another sign of the downturn in commercial real estate: Longtime Portland developer John Russell, 80, is facing a potential foreclosure of the “Black Box” at 200 Market Street, which he bought back in 1988.
Russell, who has long been civically engaged, has been pushing for a revamped Keller Auditorium, which is across the street from his property.
