Columbia River Salmon Deal Gutted

President Trump issued a memorandum to withdraw the federal government from a historic salmon recovery agreement negotiated by the Biden administration and Northwest tribes, pulling more than $1 billion of funds. Tribe representatives condemned the memo, calling it the latest in a long history of treaty betrayals. [OPB]

Will Oregon Have Enough Firefighters?

As wildfire season heats up, state officials say they’re fully staffed and prepared, but they’re not so sure about crucial federal resources. The federal government is promising it will have additional firefighters and equipment when needed, but funding cuts and last year’s record-breaking fires are fueling doubt. [Oregonian]

Hundreds of Healthcare Layoffs Coming

Healthcare company Providence is planning to cut 600 jobs across the country, including 134 jobs in Oregon, as part of what it’s calling “restructuring efforts.” The company also said it will not be filling dozens of open positions, warning that the cuts will affect patient access. [KGW]
