🌳 City Council votes to fund both parks and police

June 13, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

It’s Friday! Woohoo 🎉 This weekend, you can look forward to mild, sunny weather and 9 p.m. sunsets. It’s a perfect time to bike to the bluffs — or hike into Mount Tabor 🌇

What's CITY Talking About?

Parks and Police Compromise Passed

City Council voted in favor of directing $2 million in unspent Portland Police Bureau funding back to the bureau to help fill vacancies for this coming fiscal year. That political compromise (for now) keeps the downtown business community on board for a renewal (or possible expansion) of the city’s parks levy, which is under consideration for the November ballot. Portland Police Arrest 3 at ICE Protests

On Wednesday night, two protesters were arrested for allegedly starting a fire against an ICE building while a third allegedly tried to punch and choke a police officer. Portland protests have remained small, and while police were observed clearing an obstacle set by protesters earlier in the week, police chief Bob Day now says officers will monitor for criminal behavior, but not assist in immigration enforcement. I think anybody that's been inside one of these older school buildings in Portland are like, 'Wow. They're really keeping the history alive in here, really keeping it going.'

Schools Aren’t Up for the Heat

On the Friday news roundup, Portland Public Schools closed schools early on Monday because of a heatwave. The decision highlights another issue with aging school buildings — a lack of AC. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for an eye-catching display outside Flowers Tommy Luke, at Southwest Taylor and 9th Avenue.

“They also have a bubble machine occasionally!” wrote reader Nanci Courtney.

“Love the bike as a flower vase — always a beautiful display for the flower shop,” wrote reader Cheryl M.

“This was a Starbucks location until the pandemic; after being vacant for a while it was leased by this wonderful florist,” added reader Charles Noble.

This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Stephan Vertal, a regular contributor to the scavenger hunt:

Where is this pair?

Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.

Note: If you are eager to know the answer or to find the next scavenger hunt, check the Friday, June 27 newsletter. (We’ll be skipping a week.)

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt (almost) every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
