Which billionaire could cause a Portland riot?

May 30, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! It’s going to be hot again today — after yesterday’s rain ☀️ The end of May has been warm, and June is looking to be warmer and less rainy than the typical year — if the climatologists’ predictions are right.

What's CITY Talking About?

Court Overturns Trump Tariffs

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, leading 12 states in a lawsuit against the Trump administration's tariffs, won a major victory Wednesday. The U.S. Court of International Trade in New York City overturned most of the Trump tariffs, ruling that the President had exceeded his powers in using emergency authority to impose the tariffs. Changes to Bottle Bill

Gov. Tina Kotek is poised to approve changes to the historic Bottle Bill that will allow grocery stores to limit hours they accept cans and bottles, even permitting some downtown Portland grocery stores to get rid of redemptions altogether. The Legislation also expands the work of The People’s Depot, a makeshift redemption site under the Morrison Bridge. Open just 2 hours and 15 minutes, Monday to Friday, The People’s Depot already accounts for 6% of redemptions in Portland. [Oregonian 🔒]

Would [Jeff Bezos] buy the Blazers, and then move them to Seattle? Riots. Riots if that happened.

Where Is It?

Located on Willamette Greenway Trail (across from 5150 S Landing Dr.), this beaver’s head shows the wear-and-tear of affectionate pets. And it’s always wearing something — for Mardi Gras, Easter, Halloween, or other holidays.

“Someone always decks out the beaver in festive wear every single holiday,” writes reader Janellie Mesa. “Rain or shine, this beaver is a fashionista!”

"It’s always a highlight of my walk,” writes reader Arleen R.

A shoutout to those readers — and the rest of the first 10 with correct responses: Fay W., Olivia, LeaPDX, Ella B., both Elizabeth B.'s, Brian C., and Jenny Taylor.

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Stephan Vertal, who has become a regular contributor to this segment. Thank you!

Where is this sculpture?

Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
